I have been photographing babies for a long time and it still remains one of my favorite types of photography I do, but the way I approach newborn photo shoots has definitely evolved over the years. When I first started my business (more than 15 years ago!!), naked babies sleeping in baskets were all the rage so, naturally, that’s what I offered. But a few years in and after becoming a mother myself, I realized that I loved the subject matter but didn’t find that style creatively fulfilling. Rather than taking the same posed portraits of every baby, I wanted to capture the magic of that fleeting window of time when life slows down and every day is a blur so my clients could look at the photos back at and remember just how it was.
I put my bin of newborn photography props in storage and started to spend less time trying to coax babies to sleep just to get a few photos and focused more on candid, authentic moments of everyone loving on each other. Now, each newborn session is different because every family is different and we come away with a great variety of photos and I love that! It is also WAY less stressful for everyone involved!
These favorites from a recent newborn family session are exactly the type of photos I strive for in my work and reminded me of how much I love what I do. More of this please!
